Mindful Pregnancy

Maintaining your spiritual equilibrium in a changing body

What is mindfulness? It's a state of awareness of both your physical being and your spiritual being, and whether they are in harmony or not. When your body and soul are in harmony, you are acutely aware of your surroundings, and how they affect you both internally and externally. When the two are disconnected, your body and soul are catapulted into disarray, searching for connection and meaning.

Mindfulness is a state of being in which you thoughtfully and purposefully go about your day, knowing each and every action nourishes your soul. It's about choosing activities that invigorate you, both on the macro and micro scales. It's also about navigating the distractions of life, and knowing how to get back to your sense of inner peace and connection.

"...each and every action nourishes your soul."

But how do you maintain a state of mindful awareness when not one, but two souls are directly affecting your being? We are of course talking about the little one inside you, your baby-to-be. With a surge of hormones, constantly changing emotions, tidal waves of pregnancy symptoms, and a constantly changing body, maintaining a sense of physical balance is difficult. Add the complexities of spiritual beings, and the task of a mindful pregnancy seems near impossible. The truth is, it's not!

Having a mindful pregnancy means not only listening to what your body wants - a revolving door of cravings, exercise, hydration, and sleep - but also to what your spirit wants. Relaxing after a long day by listening to peaceful music not only recharges your body, it also allows your soul time to peek through into your subconscious. It gives your time to stop and listen to what your spirit wants, and maybe even what your baby's spirit wants. Having a mindful pregnancy means enjoying each moment in life as you experience them, from the first time you hear your baby's heartbeat, to the first time you see them move in an ultrasound, to the first time you feel their tiny bodies flutter inside you. It's about paying attention to your surroundings, because each and every experience you encounter is there for a reason, to teach you a lesson, bring you joy, or move you in the right direction.

Being truly mindful in pregnancy however, does not always mean every day will be calming and fulfilling. We are humans after all, and are beautifully imperfect. It is very easy to slip back to relying only on our physical senses to navigate through our day. When you are actively practicing mindfulness though, you become aware of the moments that slip too far from your spiritual balance point. You also become aware of what you need to do to regain your spiritual equilibrium. This doesn't necessarily mean deep meditations to channel spirit directly. It could be as simple as lighting a candle to energetically cleanse your space, taking a few deep breaths (practicing those breathing techniques for labour), or wearing a crystal bracelet to align your energies.
